Tulane’s Jalen Cook and Moon Ursin earn weekly Louisiana college basketball honors
LAFAYETTE – After each helping their respective teams to victories after an extensive layoff, Tulane’s Jalen Cook and Moon Ursin were each honored on Monday as the duo was selected as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week.
The tandem was honored after being nominated by their respective basketball sports information directors and selected by a statewide panel of SIDs and media members.
Cook, a freshman guard, was named the LSWA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Ursin, a senior guard, was tabbed as the LSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
After the Tulane men’s basketball team missed 21 days due to a shutdown because of COVID-19, Cook showed no signs of rust, as he averaged 22.5 points per game in two outings. He shot 63 percent from 3-point range and had zero turnovers in a combined 73 minutes, as he guided the Green Wave to their first 2-0 start in American Athletic Conference play since the 2014-15 campaign.
The Walker, La., native opened the week with 25 points in an 85-84 AAC victory over Memphis last Wednesday, going 9-for-16 from the floor and 4 of 6 from behind the 3-point line. He followed his AAC debut performance with 20 points with three 3-pointers and three assists in a 68-60 win at Cincinnati on New Year’s Day.
After the Tulane women’s team returned to the court for its first game in 22 days, Ursin helped lead the Green Wave to a 72-62 win on Thursday against Wofford.
Ursin, a Destrehan, La., native, scored 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds while also adding four assists. She recorded her fifth double-double of the season shooting 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the field including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
