NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University football head coach Willie Fritz entered the start of spring practice with one challenge to his team in 2020.

“Our big goal is to go from good to great,” Fritz said.

To do that, the Green Wave has begun to work on the little things which the fifth-year head coach hopes will translate into big results.

Under Fritz’s direction, Tulane has won back-to-back bowl games for the first time program history and has posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1998. Despite the recent success of the program, Fritz still believes there is much room to grow.

“We want to be a more disciplined team,” Fritz said. “We had way too many penalties last fall. We are emphasizing that right now, and we have to limit that. This is a really good league, and there are going to be a lot of close games.”

In 2019, Tulane found itself in plenty of close games, as three of its six losses came by one score or less.

“The most disciplined teams are going to win those close ball games,” Fritz said.

Over the course of Fritz’s four previous years in Uptown, the Green Wave has played in 22 games decided by one score or less.

In addition to working on being a more disciplined team, the Green Wave has spent the first two days of team practice rolling out some additional route concepts and has made changes to some alignments while working in different personnel groupings and splits.

“It is going to look like it will be one play and then be something else,” Fritz said. “It will be a game of chess between the offense and the defense.”

On Saturday, the Green Wave returns to Yulman Stadium for their third practice of the spring.

“We go every other day, and we talk about having fifteen great practices,” Fritz said.
