NEW ORLEANS – Sophomore third baseman Kody Hoese went 2-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Chase Solesky pitched 5.0 innings in a strong start to lead Tulane baseball to a 6-2 win over Lamar Wednesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues led off the bottom of the first with his first career home run – an opposite field shot to right that tied the game, 1-1. Solesky (1-0) gave up the lone run in the top of the first, then allowed just three baserunners across the next four scoreless frames. He only allowed one runner past first base in his start, as the Green Wave (5-3) swept the two-game midweek set from the Cardinals (3-7).

Junior center fielder Grant Witherspoon recorded his third straight multiple hit game with a pair of hits and two runs, and junior catcher Ty Johnson tallied two RBI. Graduate senior Ben White pitched 2.0 innings in relief, and redshirt sophomore Trent Johnson and Will McAffer closed out the game with scoreless frames.

“I thought we passed two tests this week,” Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. “One was coming back Tuesday after an off day Monday and a tough weekend result-wise at Ole Miss. For us to leave that in Oxford, learn from it and come back and play as well as we did Tuesday was good. Then we came out here tonight in the second game, and we knew Lamar is a very good team and they were going to come out punching. They did early, and we were able to respond. The way we handled ourselves to come off of a series loss and then off of a win the night before and just play good baseball all around – it was good for us.”

The Green Wave broke the 1-1 tie in the fourth when junior first baseman Trevor Jensen doubled to left and scored on a double to left center by Hoese. Junior right fielder Tyler Heinrichs plated Hoese with an RBI groundout to make the score 3-1.

Artigues reached on a strikeout wild pitch with one out in the fifth and Witherspoon singled setting up a sacrifice fly by Ty Johnson and an RBI single by Hoese that extended the lead to 5-1.

In the top of the seventh, Lamar cut it to 5-2 on an RBI single by right fielder Chase Kemp. The Green Wave responded again, however, with consecutive doubles by Witherspoon and Johnson to make the score 6-2.

The Cardinals scored in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by first baseman Robin Adames. Lamar starter Taylor Rich (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings and took the loss.

The Green Wave play host to Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series this weekend at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at TulaneTix.com, at the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Jr. Center or by calling 504-861-WAVE.
