NEW ORLEANS, La. – Tulane sophomore outfielder Stephen Sepcich has been voted the Athletes for Hope University Student-Athlete of the Year for 2018-19 the organization announced on Wednesday.

As one of six student-athletes nominated for their community service work as one of the organization’s AFHU Student-Athletes of the Month, Sepcich earned the most votes in an online campaign to choose the student-athlete as well as the team of the year. Nearly 2,900 votes were cast over the two-week voting period.

“As anyone else who has a passion for service would say, recognition is never the goal. The goal is to do your best and try and fill needs in your community,” Sepcich said. “However, I am extremely blessed to be selected by Athletes for Hope out of many other deserving student-athletes.”

As a local product from Jesuit High School Sepcich and his classmates began Hams for Fams, a non-profit organization that provides full meals for families in need. Now in its fourth year, the organization has fed over 500 families and have undertaken hundreds of hours of preparation that includes planning, gaining volunteers and locating families in need of help.

Last December the group successfully fed 230 families, with packing and delivery taking place December 22-23.

“What an awesome recognition for Stephen! He puts a lot of time and effort into helping others,” head coach Travis Jewett said. “Being the recipient of this award says a lot about the type of person he is and his dedication to service.”

Athletes for Hope is an organization that was founded in 2007 by a group of athletes from around the sports world to help bring a unified approach to philanthropy. They assist in helping those in the sports world find a place to begin their efforts in helping others.
