Tulane rallies in 9th but falls to Dayton in 11 innings

NEW ORLEANS – NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University baseball team (15-8-1) dropped a 7-3 game the University of Dayton (9-10) on Saturday afternoon inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The Green Wave was unable to capitalize on opportunities as it left 13 runners on base in the first loss since March 15th at LSU.

“Offensively we need to land on a few more balls,” head coach Travis Jewett said. “I thought we pitched well, but we had a few chances to blow this thing wide open and couldn’t land on one.”

Freshman outfielder Jackson Linn hit a dramatic home run to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. It was one of his four hits in the game as Linn extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Sophomore left-hander Dylan Carmouche was on the bump for Tulane and struck out ten for the second start in a row. Carmouche went 6.2 innings and allowed three earend runs on four hits.

Freshman Chris Peguero got the start for Dayton and went five innings allowing six hits, but no runs.

The Flyers wasted no time and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Wave loaded the bases in the first and second innings but were not able to put any runs across.

Carmouche labored through the first few frames but settled down and struck out four of five in the fourth and fifth innings.

Tulane had runners on first and third for Simon Baumgardt who proceeded to hit a one-hop shot down the third base line that was snagged by Dayton’s man on the hot corner who dove to the third base bag for an impressive inning-ending play.

Dayton added on another run in the top of the seventh and was threatening to extend its lead with runners on first and second with one out. The Flyers attempted a double steal, but Luis Aviles threw a seed to Brady Hebert who put an acrobatic tag down on the runner for the second out of the frame.

The Flyers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth. Clifton Slagel entered the game and got two crucial outs to keep the Wave within reach.

Ethan Groff, who has been bothered by a knee injury, pinch hit for Brady Hebert and led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to right-center. Aviles came up next and lined a single off the Flyers’ shortstop, scoring Groff. Linn then strode to the plate and on the first pitch hammered a two-run game-tying home run over the right field wall.

Dayton put up four runs in the top of the 11th highlighted by a three-run double by Marcos Pujols.
