Tulane names Shane Spellman as Beach Volleyball Assistant Coach
NEW ORLEANS — Tulane beach volleyball has hired Shane Spellman as an assistant coach, according to an announcement by head coach Wayne Holly.
Spellman joins the Green Wave after spending the previous three years at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisc., where he served as an assistant volleyball coach with the men’s and women’s programs (Aug. 2014 – May 2016), before his appointment as interim head volleyball coach of both programs (men’s in spring 2016, women’s in fall 2016).
“We’re thrilled to add Shane to our full-time beach volleyball coaching staff,” Holly said. “Shane is a great teacher, an excellent recruiter, and he shares our approach to developing the person and the player. Shane will be involved in all aspects of the program, with a particular emphasis on analytics, scouting, and video analysis. He’ll also serve as our primary blocking teacher.”
While at Cardinal Stritch, Spellman compiled 5-2 and 6-4 records as interim head coach of the men’s and women’s teams, respectively. As interim head coach, Spellman oversaw all administrative operations, practice planning responsibilities and game management duties, while leading the women’s program to a second-place finish in the CCAC North Division.
Prior to his stint as interim head coach, Spellman worked as an assistant coach, where he aided in practice, travel, and match planning, offseason skills development and opponent scouting. Spellman also recruited student-athletes and helped them navigate campus resources, including financial aid, residence life and academic scheduling.
Spellman also served as a sand volleyball coordinator for the Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club from March 2015 – March 2016. Spellman managed athlete registration, coordinated practice and training plans, and ran a 50-team tournament, in which he dealt with all operational tasks, including team recruitment, registration and payment.
“I couldn’t be happier to join Tulane,” Spellman said. “The beach volleyball program has built such a great reputation, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to be the assistant coach. The athletes are dedicated to their athletic and academic pursuits, and it’s an honor to be able to coach them. I’m very excited to help build upon the solid foundation that already exists.”
Spellman received his bachelor of science in marketing from Rivier University in May of 2014, before earning his master of science in sport management from Cardinal Stritch in May of 2016. Spellman was a three-year starter for Rivier’s men’s volleyball team, earning Second Team All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference honors twice and competing in three Division III NCAA Tournaments.
