Tulane moves to Saints facility for Thursday night workout
NEW ORLEANS – Seeking shelter from the storms that drenched the city for most of Thursday, Tulane football moved its preseason workout to the New Orleans Saints indoor practice facility in Metairie.
The Green Wave held a two-hour workout in helmets and shoulder pads Thursday night at the Airline Drive home of the city’s NFL team. Storms early Thursday morning forced the Wave to reschedule its practice time.
Head coach Willie Fritz said the team had a good workout in the evening, and he was pleased with how well the players adapted to the altered schedule.
“They did fantastic. We’re so blessed the Saints allowed us to come out here,” Fritz said. “It rained all day today, and we came out here and had a great practice. We went two hours and fifteen minutes, and it felt like we went 45 minutes. It was a great workout.”
As opponents make adjustments during games – running new plays or switching defenses – so must Tulane. Thursday’s modified schedule was a first step in preparing this team to take on those challenges during the season.
“We talk to them all the time about how we have to adapt and improvise,” said Fritz. “Sometimes you start a game plan, and they’re playing a different defense that what you thought they were going to, and you have to change. We had to do the same thing with the schedule.”
The Green Wave will return to the Saints’ facility for practice Friday night. The Saints announced Thursday they will practice at Yulman Stadium on Sunday at 7 p.m. Tulane practices are closed to the public.
