NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the second consecutive day the Tulane baseball team was able to make a game of it against the UConn Huskies, but the Green Wave would not be able to get the shutout innings it would need down the stretch, falling 10-6 Friday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Down by a 4-1 score, Tulane (30-24, 11-11 American) plated three runs in the fifth to tie the game against the Huskies (33-21, 12-11). But as it happened the previous night, UConn answered back and scored three runs in the very next inning and got three more in the ninth as the Green Wave would only score two more runs for the rest of the game in the defeat.

“Today was an opportunity day. We had opportunity signs all over the place and we continue to have opportunities put in front of us that we don’t take,” head coach Travis Jewett said.

Freshman Hudson Haskin went 2-for-4 on the night with a home run and three RBI, followed by David Bedgood who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Luke Glancy also had two hits, including a double, with a run scored.

Starting pitcher Trent Johnson pitched five innings and allowed four runs, with only one earned after two Tulane defensive errors, on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Krishna Raj (3-2) wound up with the loss as he allowed three runs on two hits in a third of an inning after the Green Wave had just tied the game.

As with Tulane, UConn reliever Colby Dunlop (5-4) wound up with the win as he had come on to get the final out of the fifth and returned for the sixth after the Huskies went back on top pitching only 0.2 innings with a walk in the outing.

Designated hitter Pat Winkel had three RBI on three hits and a run scored for UConn, while Anthony Prato had two RBI and two runs scored on three hits. David Langer came off the bench to go 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

UConn plated two runs in the opening inning thanks to a hit and an error, as Tulane took to the bottom of the first and got a double down the line from Trevor Jensen. After moving to third on a fly out to right, Haskin singled through the left side to put the Green Wave on the board down 2-1.

The second Tulane error of the game led to another two-run inning for the Huskies, as UConn got three hits after that to push the visitor lead to 4-1.

With two outs in the fifth Grant Mathews doubled off the wall in left center to reach, and after a pitching change for UConn, Jonathon Artigues singled to right for the RBI and pull Tulane to within two at 4-2. A single by Glancy put runners at the corners, with Bedgood bringing in both on a double of his own to left center to tie the game with the Huskies at 4-4.

UConn struck right back in the sixth, plating three runs on three hits to re-take the lead going up 7-4 over the Green Wave. The Huskies plated three more on four hits in the ninth to put a little more breathing room between themselves and the Green Wave.

Kody Hoese tripled down the line in right to open the Tulane ninth, as Haskin came through with a bomb to left center to cut the UConn lead to 10-6.

First pitch is set for 1 p.m. for the series finale against the Huskies at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
