Tulane defeats Temple for 10th straight volleyball win
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball earned a four-set victory (25-14, 18-25, 25-14, 25-17) against Temple on its home court on Friday night, extending its winning streak to 10 American Athletics Conference matches.
“This win moves us into solo third place in the conference and a chance to get to second if we continue to play at this level,” head coach Jim Barnes said. “I’m so proud of our team and how they enjoy working hard and competing. Everyone did their part to overwhelm Temple and it was a huge night for three freshmen, Yvette [Burcescu], Makala [Heidelberg] and Kayla [Dinkins].”
Tulane tallied 58 total team kills while hitting .331 in four sets of action, holding Temple to a .165 hitting percentage.
Freshman outside hitter Makala Heidelberg recorded her 10th career double-double to lead the Green Wave on the court, tallying 11 kills, 13 digs and three blocks while hitting .500.
Freshman outside hitter Yvette Burcescu was a strong offensive force for Tulane, recording 12 kills while hitting .385 and adding two blocks. Junior right side hitter Erika Hansel finished with nine kills while hitting .304, while sophomore outside hitter Lexie Douglas, senior middle hitter Dayna Kern and freshman middle hitter Kayla Dinkins each recorded eight kills while hitting .250, .238 and .263, respectively.
Senior libero Lisa Mordell led the team defensively, earning 14 digs while also tallying two service aces.
Three consecutive kills from Heidelberg and Burcescu sent the Green Wave on a 5-0 run at the start of the match, giving the team an early 8-3 lead. Another 5-1 run kept Tulane on top with a 13-6 score, with the Green Wave staying ahead for the remainder of the first set, ultimately finishing it with a kill from Dinkins at match point to give the home team a 1-0 match advantage.
A 7-1 run from the Owls gave Temple an early 14-8 lead in the second set, which the team would hold to eventually tie the match at 1-1. A kill from Kern sent the Green Wave on a 5-2 run but was not enough to catch up to the Owls, with the visitors taking the set with a 25-18 score.
Kills from Hansel, Douglas and Kern, along with a service ace from sophomore setter Jenna Ibieta, sent Tulane on a 6-0 run at the start of the third set to put the team ahead with an 8-4 score. The Green Wave stayed consistent for the remainder of play, grabbing a 7-0 run to put the team at match point, with a kill from Heidelberg closing it and sending Tulane back in the lead with a 2-1 match score.
The Olive and Blue continued with their offensive domination in the fourth and final set, taking a 5-1 lead with back-to-back service aces from junior libero Kaylie McHugh. Kills from Heidelberg, Dinkins, Hansel and Douglas sent the Green Wave on a 7-1 run, gaining a nine-point lead with a 16-7 score. A kill from Hansel at match point solidified the win for the home team, avoiding a fifth set.
Tulane looks to earn its 11th win in a row this Sunday, hosting UConn at Avron B. Fogelman Arena at 1 p.m.
