Macon Clark

LAKE CHARLES – Tulane defensive back Macon Clark became the state’s first defensive multi-week winner for the Louisiana Sports Writers Association College Football Players of the Week award after being voted as the top defensive player in the state. He was joined by Louisiana Tech quarterback Parker McNeil and Nicholls kicker Gavin Lasseigne, who were named offensive and special teams players of the week respectively.

Clark, who was named top defensive player in week one of the season, posted a game-high nine tackles, including two for loss and a second-half interception to lead Tulane’s defense in a 24-9 victory over ECU on Saturday. Both of the negative-yardage stops came on third down and forced either a punt or a field goal attempt by the visiting Pirates. The interception was a third-down play as well and set up a 42-yard field goal by the Green Wave. Clark led a Tulane effort that limited ECU to a 7-for-19 combined clip on third and fourth down and its lowest scoring output since a six-point showing in the 2019 season opener at NC State.

McNeil was dominant in the Bulldogs’ 41-31 win over UTEP to open Conference USA play, completing 18 of 27 passes for 266 yards and a season-high four touchdowns. He completed 16-of-20 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone. The Austin, Texas native was the first Louisiana Tech player to throw for four touchdowns since Austin Kendall accomplished the feat on Sept. 18, 2021. McNeil currently ranks fourth nationally in passing yards per completion with 14.8.

Lasseigne connected on a career-high four field goals in Saturday’s 19-17 win at HCU, including a 43-yarder as time expired for the victory. After HCU took the lead in the fourth quarter, Lasseigne drilled a career-longer 52-yarder to put Nicholls back on top. The Huskies retook the lead with 43 seconds left before his last field goal split the uprights for the 19-17 win. Lasseigne accounted for 13 of the Colonels’ 19 points.

Players for the weekly LSWA awards are nominated by school sports information directors and the ballot is voted on by a panel of LSWA sports writers.
