NEW ORLEANS – Tulane sophomore designated hitter Grant Mathews was named the American Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week as well as a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week after hitting four home runs and going 8-for-12 in the weekend series win over Memphis.

Mathews had a monster weekend, hitting four home runs, including a program and conference record-tying three home run game on Saturday. He added a double and three walks, tallying five RBI and four runs scored in three games. He batted .667 overall, slugged an astounding 1.750 and put up a .733 on-base percentage in the series.

Mathews recorded at least two hits in each game, and all four of his career home runs were hit this weekend, all tape-measure shots. He homered into the parking lot beyond right field in his first at bat on Friday and went 3-for-4 in the game.

On Saturday, he homered to center field three times: the first one to straightaway center, the second a two-run shot over batter’s eye in dead center and the third high off the light tower in deep right center.

On Sunday, he walked in his first two at bats, then singled and lined a double to left field to add to his outstanding weekend.

This is the first American Athletic Conference weekly award for Mathews, and the second for a Tulane player this season. Junior Kaleb Roper earned American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on March 14.

Tulane travels to UL-Lafayette for its final midweek contest of the season at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before closing the regular season at UCF this weekend.
