NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball came up short against Southeastern Louisiana, 13-12, Wednesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in a contest in which the teams traded the lead four times and the issue was not settled until the final out was officially recorded.

Trailing 13-11 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Green Wave (6-7) drew two two-out walks and scored a run on a single by junior outfielder Ty Johnson that cut it to 13-12. A fly out, however, ended the late comeback attempt and a game that featured 25 runs, 22 hits and five errors between the teams.

Johnson and sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues accounted for six of Tulane’s 14 hits with three apiece. Artigues drove in three runs, all on a bases-clearing double as part of a four-run second inning that gave the Wave a 4-1 lead.

“That’s a good enough offensive performance to come out of here with a ‘W’,” Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. “We knew they weren’t going to fold when we got up big. But we responded, and we’ve shown the ability to do that. That’s a positive. It was just the freebies again. We’re going to have to keep trying to push buttons. We just have to stay on our feet.”

In five half-innings the two offenses strung together at least three runs. Tulane had consecutive three-run frames in the sixth and seventh, which tied the game 8-8, then put the Wave ahead, 11-8. The Lions (9-5) put up seven runs in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead and scored five runs in the eighth to go ahead 13-11.

Johnson’s first RBI was a single in the seventh that made the score 11-8. Tulane had taken the lead earlier in the inning junior catcher Acy Owen singled home a run and senior designated hitter Matt Rowland scored on a wild pitch.

Owen had driven in the first run of Tulane’s sixth inning with a base hit to right center, then along with Artigues, scored on a throwing error at short that sailed high allowing the Green Wave to tie the score, 8-8

On an RBI single by Jensen in the third inning, Tulane extended its lead to 5-1 after the four-run second. Jensen, Rowland and sophomore shortstop Sal Gozzo each recorded two hits, while Rowland, Owen and Gozzo scored twice.

SLU scored a run without a hit in the first inning when shortstop Brennan Breaud walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Taylor Schwaner. The Lions took advantage of six hits and two walks, sending 11 batters to the plate, to score seven runs in the fifth inning. In the eighth, SLU scored five unearned runs on two hits, three walks and two hit batters after an error and two fly outs started the inning.

Tulane sent five pitchers to the mound in relief while SLU used four relievers in the game. Sophomore Trent Johnson (1-1) took the loss and Trey Shaffer (1-0) earned the win.

The Green Wave play host to Purdue this weekend in a three-game series at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
