NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team will open their 2019 fall campaign with their first training session on Thursday, October 4 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

“We are excited to begin this portion of our season,” third-year head coach Travis Jewett said. “The fall allows us to lay bricks and build a solid foundation for the spring. We look forward to watching our players compete to become the best team that we can be.”

As a result of the new NCAA rule change, teams are now allowed to play two fall games in addition to their overall 56 regular season games. The Green Wave’s first fall game will be on the road at South Alabama at Stanky Field on Saturday, October 27, and the first pitch will be at 1 p.m. Tulane’s second fall game will be played at home against Southern Miss on Sunday, November 4 with first pitch scheduled for noon.

The Green Wave’s 2019 roster includes the return of their entire infield from last season in senior first baseman Trevor Jensen, redshirt junior second baseman Jonathon Artigues, junior shortstop Sal Gozzo, junior third baseman Kody Hoese and senior catcher Acy Owen. Additionally, Tulane will also have veteran returners in the outfield with the likes of senior Ty Johnson, senior Tyler Heinrichs and redshirt junior Grant Mathews who is looking to make a move from first base, as well as redshirt sophomore Kobi Owen.

On the mound will be returnees Kaleb Roper, Keagan Gillies, as well as Ross Massey, Trent Johnson, and Chase Solesky. Chase Solesky redshirted a year ago and looks to make a significant impact after an impressive summer-ball season that saw him ranked 11th on Perfect Game’s top prospects from the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Brendan Cellucci, who won summer league titles with both the Baltimore Redbirds in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League and the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod League, and Connor Pellerin, who tied for eighth in the West Coast League in strikeouts with 50 in just 35.1 innings, will couple with Josh Bates and Justin Campbell as other returning arms looking to make an impact.

The team reclaims 81.1 percent of its at-bats from a year ago to go along with 79.9 percent of their total hits. Additionally, the Green Wave will begin the 2019 campaign with the return of 76.9 percent of their innings pitched from last year.

New to the coaching staff is Tulane alumnus Daniel Latham who will take the reigns as the pitching coach. Latham returns to New Orleans after seven successful seasons in the same role at Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond. During his playing career with the Green Wave, he serves as a closer from 2004-07 and was part of the Green Wave’s 2005 team that reached the College World Series.

Tulane will host in its own Fall Ball World Series which is open to the public. Dates for the event will be announced in October.
