Total of 54 area teams in volleyball playoffs with four defending champs earning top seeds

A total of 54 teams from Greater New Orleans area districts are seeded among the 160 teams announced today in the LHSAA state volleyball playoffs which begin Tuesday. Four of the five defending state champions earned top seeds once again.

In Division I, four-time defending state champion Mount Carmel Academy is the top-seed and the Cubs are the clear favorite to make it five straight. They have lost just once in-state, to defending Division III state champion Teurlings Catholic. Mount Carmel opens with 32nd-seed John Ehret Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Should the Cubs advance, a potential rematch with district rival awaits them in the second round as Dominican, seeded 16th, hosts No. 17 Barbe in the opening round.

Another district rival, Archbishop Chapelle is the second-seed. The Chimpunks (30-10) will open at home against West Monroe. Mount Carmel won all three regular season meetings against Chapelle.

Mandeville is the fifth-seed. The Skippers will entertain No. 28 Denham Springs in the opening round with a potential matchup with 12th-seed Hahnville in the second round as the Tigers open at home against No. 21 Sulphur.

Hahnville’s primary rival, Destrehan, is seeded 20th and will open on the road at No. 13 Acadiana.

Ponchatoula is No. 19 and the Green Wave open at No. 14 Lafayette.

Chalmette is seeded at No. 22 and the Owls travel to 11th-seed Central Thursday at 6 p.m.

Slidell is the 23rd-seed and the Tigers are at No. 10 Ruston.

Hammond is seeded 30th and the Tors head to third-seeded Dutchtown in the opening round.

Teurlings Catholic (37-2) is the top-seed and clear favorite in Division II. The five-time defending champion Rebels host 32nd-seed LaGrange in the first round. The winner faces the winner of No. 17 Warren Easton at No. 16 Live Oak.

Cabrini (26-9) earned the second-seed and the Crescents will host No. 31 Ellender Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Four matchups involving area teams are the spotlight in Division II.

No. 5 Ben Franklin entertains No. 28 East Jefferson in the first round in a rematch of District 7-II rivals. The Falcons won the regular season matchup.

In another matchup of local teams, 13th-seed Lakeshore plays host to No. 20 Helen Cox.

The third matchup of local teams has No. 19 Riverdale at No. 14 Academy of Our Lady.

The fourth involves a pair of Northshore teams as No. 18 Salmen treks to Covington to face No. 15 St. Scholastica in a rematch of District 5-II rivals. The Doves won at Salmen in the regular season.

No. 10 Belle Chasse plays host to No. 23 Plaquemine Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Karr is the 21st-seed and the Cougars head to No. 12 Terrebonne to start the playoffs.

Landry-Walker is at No. 29 and the Chargin’ Bucs face a tall task at No. 4 South Lafourche.

In Division III, defending state champion Vandebilt Catholic (33-9) is the top-seed and the Terriers open at home against No. 32 DeQuincy with the winner to take on the matchup of 17th-seed Berwick at No. 16 Pearl River in round two.

St. Michael (31-5) is the second-seed and the Warriors host No. 31 Jennings.

Lusher earned the 30th-seed and the Lions trek to Thibodaux to face E.D. White Catholic Tuesday at 6 p.m.

De La Salle is No. 4 and the Cavaliers host 29th-seed Northwest in the opening round.

Ursuline is at No. 8 and the Lions entertain No. 25 West Feliciana Wednesday at 5 p.m.

No. 22 Loranger makes the trip to No. 11 Brusly to open the playoffs.

No. 24 Springfield heads to No. 9 Rayne Tuesday at 5 p.m.

In Division IV, Archbishop Hannan (35-6) is the No. 1 seed and the Hawks are home against District 4-IV rival in No. 32 Bogalusa. Hannan has the only in-state win over Teurlings Catholic and the Hawks easily defeated the Lumberjacks in the regular season. The winner takes on the winner of the first-round match with No. 17 Loyola Prep at No. 16 Riverside Academy.

Four-time defending state champion Pope John Paul II is the No. 4 and the Jaguars play host to No. 29 Donaldsonville. The Jaguars have been plagued by injuries this season.

There are three matchups involving local teams.

No. 5 Northlake Christian will host No. 28 KIPP Renaissance while 20th-seed Patrick Taylor will play at No. 13 St. Charles Catholic.

John Curtis Christian is No. 7 and the Patriots will host No. 26 Franklin at 5:30 p.m.

Pine is No. 22 and the Raiders travel to Metairie to take on No. 11 Haynes.

Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans is at No. 8 and the Cardinals await a visit from No. 25 Port Allen.

Newman is at No. 9 and the Greenies will entertain No. 24 Northeast.

Thomas Jefferson is at No. 14 and gets a home match against No. 19 Evangel Christian.

St. Mary’s Academy makes the playoffs at No. 30 and will have a tough opening round match at third-seed University High Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Martin Luther King Charter is in at No. 31 and will head to second-seed Notre Dame (31-14). The winner will take on the winner of No. 18 Patterson at No. 15 St. Thomas Aquinas with that match set for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

In Division V, two-time defending state champion Country Day (31-5) is the top-seed and the Cajuns host 32nd-seeded Southern Lab in the opening round.

The second-seed is Ascension Episcopal (27-10) will host No. 31 Brighton.

There are three matchups of area teams.

No. 7 McGehee awaits No. 26 Kenner Discovery Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Eighth-seeded St. Martin’s Episcopal will host No. 25 West St. John Tuesday at 6 p.m.

No. 15 First Baptist Christian entertains No. 18 False River.

No. 19 St. Katharine Drexel is at No. 14 Crescent City Christian. The Yellow Jackets won at home in straight sets over the Crescents on Oct. 15.

No. 27 KIPP-Booker T. Washington makes the playoffs for the first time and travels to No. 6 Episcopal of Acadiana.
