Girls Prep Basketball Playoff Report for Thursday, Feb. 20

It was a good night for area teams in the opening round of the LHSAA girls basketball state playoffs Wednesday evening.

In Division I, 3-time defending state champion John Curtis opened defense of its title with a 50-32 victory over St. Joseph’s Academy at River Ridge in a state quarterfinal game, a result of the miniscule 8-team bracket in Division I.

The Patriots (25-4) will face a familiar foe in the semifinals in District 9-5A rival and fourth seed Dominican (23-9), who ousted district foe and No. 5 seed Archbishop Chapelle 44-26. The Chipmunks end their season 14-14. It was the third win for Dominican over Chapelle this season. The Lady Patriots defeated Dominican twice in district play.

In Division II, fourth-seeded Ursuline Academy dismissed No. 13 Archbishop Hannan 65-27 in regional round action. The Lions (18-12) advance to the quarterfinals against the winner of tonight’s contest pitting No. 12 E.D. White Catholic at No. 5 Parkview Baptist.

In Division III, No. 5 St. Charles Catholic handled No. 12 McGehee 48-14. The Comets (16-7) advance to travel to No. 4 Northlake Christian in the round of eight. The Hawks end their season 7-12.

The Wolverines (16-13) drilled No. 13 Ascension Episcopal 51-14.

In Division IV, No. 3 Country Day downed No. 14 St. John 65-50 in regional round action. The Cajuns (15-4) advance to the quarterfinals to play the winner of No. 6 St. Martin’s Episcopal and No. 11 St. Edmund. The Saints swept Country Day in District 9-1A play during the regular season.

In Class 4A, perennial power and No. 6 Warren Easton easily downed No. 27 Plaquemine 75-29 at home. The Eagles (19-10) move onto the regional round to face the winner of this evening’s game pitting No. 22 Morgan City at No. 11 Bolton.

No. 14 Belle Chasse edged No. 19 North Vermilion 40-36 to advance to the regional round. The Cardinals (19-6) move on to face the winner of tonight’s contest between No. 3 Karr and No. 30 Lakeshore in the regional round. The Cougars beat the Cardinals 57-41 in District 10-4A play on Feb. 3.
