Third-quarter 3-pointers lift Nuggets past Lawrence Tech
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Xavier University of Louisiana women’s basketball, 0-of-10 on second-half 3-pointers in its opener, made amends Saturday in a 64-53 victory against Lawrence Tech in the Lawrence Tech Blue Devil Classic.
The Gold Nuggets made 7-of-10 second-half 3s against the Blue Devils to erase a 27-25 halftime deficit. XULA made 5-of-7 treys — 2-of-2 apiece by Caprice Taylor and Shaelynn Moore — during the third quarter, which XULA won 23-12.
XULA was 10-of-17 overall on 3s, with Moore and Da’Jha Virgil making three apiece.
Moore scored 12 points and Virgil 11, and Taylor, Kira Mercado and O.C. Mbakop Ngassam scored seven apiece. Moore, a 5-foot-6 shooting guard, grabbed seven rebounds to lead XULA for the second consecutive game.
Danielle Hanson scored 17 points and Kendall Fisher 14 for the Blue Devils.
XULA outshot Lawrence Tech 41.7 to 29.4 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Blue Devils 40-33.
“We made some big 3s when we couldn’t Friday,” XULA head coach Bo Browder said. “We played well defensively in the third and fourth quarters. Our post players helped us out, too.”
Both teams are 1-1. UM-Dearborn finished as the event’s only 2-0 team after defeating Point Park 84-68 in the other Saturday game.
The Gold Nuggets will play their home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday against William Carey at the Convocation Center.
