LAKE CHARLES – McNeese football wrapped up its spring drills under second-year head coach Gary Goff with the annual playing of the spring game as Team White pulled out a 38-21 win over Team Blue despite Blue being spotted a 14-0 lead at the start.

“We’re healthy so it went well,” said Goff. “It was a lot of fun. We split the teams up with the 1s and 2s and gave the 2s a 14-point lead and it was the 1s job to come from behind. They made some big plays and did that. Overall, I’m very pleased with all of spring. I thought we definitely improved in the secondary and in the defensive line, the running back room and offensive line, we’re deep in some areas.

“I thought (quarterback) Tre (Simmons) did some great things and I thought Nate (Glantz) did some great things. We have a great battle going on right there. Both of those guys are really good football players.”

Behind Simmons and Glantz, Team White rolled up 431 yards on 52 plays for an 8.3 yards per play average. Simmons completed 8 of 15 passes for 140 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while Glantz was 10 for 16 for 111 yards, two TDs and a pick.

On the ground, Team White rolled up 180 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown. Josh Parker led the way with 50 yards on four carries. Coleby Hamm added 32 yards including a 5-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14-14.

Jalen Johnson had a great game with five catches for 76 yards with touchdowns catches of 17 and 31 yards, one each from Glantz and Simmons. D’angelo Durham caught two passes for 85 yards and rushed for 18. Right before the half, Durham took a screen pass from Simmons, broke a tackle and outran the defense on his way to a 75-yard score to make it a 28-14 Team White lead.

Team Blue’s play was highlighted by cornerback Jerome Robinson’s play. Robinson intercepted two passes, returning one for a 30-yard score as Team Blue’s only score in the game. He also broke up a pass and forced a fumble.

The game ended with Garrison Smith splitting the uprights one a 52-yard field goal with 8-10 yards to spare.
