Braden Olthoff tosses four innings of scoreless work

NEW ORLEANS – Redshirt junior Haydan Hastings stayed hot at the plate, as he drove in a pair of runs to help propel Team Blob to a 3-2 victory over Team Bob Friday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Both teams were held scoreless for the first four innings, but in the bottom half of the fifth inning, Team Blob broke through thanks to Hastings’ double to left field which plated freshman Andres Castro and redshirt freshman Ethan Groff.

Team Bob responded in the top half of the sixth, as freshman Bennett Lee scored on a wild pitch to trim Team Blob’s lead to 2-1. Lee reached base after he singled to left field.

In the bottom half of the frame, Team Blob moved its lead back to two thanks to freshman Camryn Szynski’s RBI single to right field, which scored freshman Chase Engelhard from second. Engelhard opened the inning with a single to left field.

Team Bob threatened again, as it trimmed Team Blob’s lead to one run thanks to a leadoff home run to left field by redshirt junior Luis Aviles. Aviles’ home run was the first for either team in the series. Team Blob reliever graduate student Keagan Gillies responded to the leadoff home run, as he struck out the next three batters to pick up the save and secure the win.

Redshirt sophomore Lane Thomas earned the win for Team Blob after he came on in relief of redshirt junior starter Braden Olthoff.

Olthoff continued his dominant pitching, as he tossed 4.0 innings of scoreless work. Olthoff finished the night by allowing just three hits and struck out seven of the 14 batters he faced to earn his second win of the series.

In two outings during the series, Olthoff has thrown 7.0 innings of scoreless work and has struck out 14 batters.

Team Bob redshirt junior starter Jack Aldrich was equally impressive, as he tossed 4.0 innings, allowed two hits and struck out a pair.

Despite the strong outing from both starters, neither pitcher would figure into the decision.

The two teams return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon at Noon for the fifth and final game of the Fall Ball World Series.
