Summer baseball leagues keep Lions sharp

HAMMOND, La. – For more than half of the returning players on the Southeastern Louisiana roster, competitive baseball continues into the summer months.

Infielder Kyle Schimpf continues his clutch hitting, earning West Coast League Player of the Week for his performance during the week of June 4-10. The native of Covington, Louisiana went 6-for-18 at the plate, scoring nine runs, smacking a pair of home runs and contributing six RBI. He also picked up three stolen bases.

Schimpf, Trey Morgan and Evan Pace are playing for the Port Angeles (Wash.) Lefties in a league that spans Oregon, Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia.

After resting their arms, right-handers Corey Gaconi and Carlisle Koestler are slated to head out for the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League in early July.

Freshman right-hander Will Warren is playing for the St. Cloud (Minn.) Rox of the Northwoods League, a team that includes former Lion Drew Avans among its record holders.

Pitcher Bryce Tassin made the longest trip of the summer, traveling to Alaska to play for the Mat-Su Miners. It marks the second season a Lion has made the trek to the 49^th state as Josh Green and Payton Robinson helped lead Mat-Su to the 2017 Alaska Baseball League title.

Freshmen Cade Pipoly, who hails from Medina, Ohio, headed closer to home for the summer, playing for the Columbus Jets of the Ohio Independent Collegiate Baseball Association.

Nick Ray, a redshirt freshman from New Orleans, Louisiana, is playing outfield for the Chillicothe (Mo.) Mudcats of the M.I.N.K. League.

Closer to Hammond, five Lions are playing in the Texas Collegiate League. Preston Faulkner, Trey Harrington and Connor Manola are with the Youngsville, Louisiana-based Acadiana Cane Cutters, while Jared Biddy and Nathan Pilutti are playing for the Bryan, Texas-based Brazos Valley Bombers.

Pitcher Jace Nini and infielder Scottie Sanders are playing for the New Orleans Boosters of the All American Amateur Baseball Association.

DIAMOND CLUB / S CLUB

Fans interested in becoming active supporters of the Southeastern baseball program are encouraged to join the Diamond Club. Lion baseball alums are encouraged to join the exclusive S Club, which is restricted to Southeastern athletic letter winners. S Club members also gain membership in the Diamond Club.
