@RaginCajunsSB junior pitcher posted all three wins of the Sun Belt-opening sweep

LAFAYETTE – Summer Ellyson collected her second Community Coffee Sun Belt Softball Pitcher of the Week award of the 2019 season for her efforts in 10th-ranked Louisiana Softball’s road series sweep at Texas State.

Ellyson steered the Ragin’ Cajuns to the sweep, the first in San Marcos since Texas State joined the Sun Belt, by earning the win in all three games.

Ellyson closed the series with 12-2/3 consecutive scoreless innings pitched and limited the Bobcats to a single run and six hits over 14-2/3 total innings pitched.

She was key in the series clincher, entering in the fourth inning of a tied contest and not yielding a hit until the seventh inning. During that relief stint she stranded five Bobcats in scoring position as Louisiana wrapped up its 47th consecutive Sun Belt series win.

In the series finale, Ellyson set the tone in the circle with four hitless frames tossed. Then she wrapped up her no-hit effort with 1-1/3 additional shutout innings after re-entering the game following the Texas State rally, which had trimmed the lead to 6-4.

“Summer has the ability to make the ball move and provide easy outs for our defense,” Louisiana Softball head coach Gerry Glasco remarked. “But what makes her even more special is her physical ability to throw at a high level over several days – and we were able to take full advantage of that at Texas State.”

Her brilliant efforts continued Monday night as she struck out a season-high 17 batters in Louisiana’s 4-1 win over regional rival Baylor.

Ellyson received her fifth career SBC Pitcher of the Week award. Her selection marks the 84th all-time SBC Pitcher of the Week in program history.

Louisiana has now claimed four SBC weekly awards in 2019. After opening weekend, Rania O’Neal and Kandral Lamb claimed SBC Player and Pitcher of the Week, and the following week on Feb. 19 Ellyson was awarded the pitching honor.

No. 11 Louisiana travels to Thibodaux, La., on Wednesday for a midweek contest at Nicholls (12-12) set for 6 p.m. at the Colonel Softball Complex. The Ragin’ Cajuns are then back at Lamson Park March 15-17 for the Sun Belt home opening series, and Alumni Weekend, hosting Troy (18-8, 2-1 Sun Belt).
