HAMMOND, La. – Stony Brook weathered several popup rain showers Saturday, rallying to defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 7-4, in nonconference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Southeastern (1-5) took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning on the strength of Trey Shaffer’s towering three-run home run to right field.

It was the first homer of the sophomore’s career, marking the third-straight game a Lion hitter accomplished the feat.

The lead, however, was short-lived as Stony Brook (3-2) posted a five-spot in the fifth, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of center fielder Michael Wilson.

Southeastern cut the deficit to two in the seventh. Brennan Breaud bunted for a base hit and later scored on Kyle Schimpf’s two-out double through the right side.

Once again, the Seawolves answered with a run of their own in the next inning.

Stony Brook starting pitcher Brian Herrmann (1-0) earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings of work. Brandon Bonnano earned his first save of the season, recording the final two outs of the game and stranding a pair of inherited runners.

Will Warren (0-1), Southeastern’s starting pitcher, suffered the loss. The sophomore right-hander allowed five runs in four innings of work.

Breaud (2-for-4) was the only Lion to pick up multiple hits in the game.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. with another Local Hero Appreciation Day. Every Sunday home game throughout the 2019 season, the Lions give thanks to first responders, service members and military personnel with a discounted ticket available at the ticket booth (must have a valid service ID).

Southeastern will counter Seawolf junior left-hander Jared Milch (0-1, 37.80) with redshirt-senior righty Carlisle Koestler (0-0, 9.00).
