State Volleyball Tournament opens Thursday

The LHSAA state volleyball tournament opens Thursday morning with quarterfinal action taking place in all classifications.

MCA, Teurlings Catholic, Vandebilt Catholic, Archbishop Hannan and Country Day

In Division I, five-time defending state champion and top seed Mount Carmel Academy (31-7) opens defense of its title against No. 8 St. Amant (21-14) at 6:10 p.m.

The winner will face the winner of No. 4 Dutchtown (34-7) and No. 5 Fontainebleau (24-9) in the semifinals Friday. The Griffins and Bulldogs square off at 8 p.m.

No. 2 Mandeville (38-4) battles No. 7 East Ascension (31-11) at 6:10 p.m. The winner will battle the winner of No. 3 Dominican and No. 6 St. Joseph’s Academy (28-14) in the semifinals Friday. Dominican (32-10) faces the Redstickers at 4:20 p.m.

In Division II, top seed Teurlings Catholic (39-4) has won state titles in six consecutive seasons covering two different classifications. The Rebels open defense of their Division II title against No. 9 Lakeshore (24-13) at 2:30 p.m. The winner faces the winner of No. 4 Vandebilt Catholic (32-12) and No. 5 St. Thomas More (28-12) in the semifinals Friday. The Terriers, who moved up in class, are the defending Division III state champs and will battle the Cougars at 8 p.m.

In a battle of local teams, No. 2 Ben Franklin (39-6) faces No. 7 Academy of Our Lady (27-5) at 8 p.m. The winner will take on the winner of No. 3 Lee Magnet (34-3) and No. 6 Assumption (34-8) in the semifinals Friday. Lee and Assumption meet at 6:10 p.m.

In Division III, No. 1 Cabrini (32-4) meets the challenge of No. 8 St. Michael (23-15) at 4:10 p.m. The winner will face the winner of No. 4 Ursuline Academy (26-11) and No. 5 Iowa (36-7) Friday. The Crescents and Iowa (36-7) meet at 2:30 p.m.

No. 2 E.D. White Catholic (34-8) battles defending Division IV state champion and No. 7 seed Archbishop Hannan (20-17) at 10:50 a.m. The Hawks moved up in class this season and the winner of their match with the Cardinals will meet the winner of No. 3 Westlake (31-10) and No. 6 Lutcher (23-13) in the semifinals Friday. Westlake battles the Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m.

In Division IV, top seed Lafayette Christian (34-4) awaits No. 9 John Curtis Christian (32-12) at 9 a.m. with the winner to face the winner of No. 4 Parkview Baptist (32-10) and No. 5 University High (31-10) in the semifinals Friday. The Eagles and Cubs square off at 12:40 p.m.

No. 2 Dunham (34-6) takes on No. 7 Notre Dame (27-18) at 12:40 p.m. The winner meets the winner of No. 3 Pope John Paul II (31-7) and No. 6 Ascension Episcopal (28-13) in the semifinals Friday. The Jaguars face Ascension Episcopal at 9 a.m.

In Division V, three-time defending state champion Country Day (44-2) battles No. 8 Ascension Catholic (20-15) at 9 a.m. The winner will face the winner of No. 4 Episcopal of Acadiana (25-12) and No. 5 McGehee (27-7) in the semifinals Friday. Episcopal of Acadiana takes on the Hawks at 10:50 a.m.

No. 2 Central Catholic t(30-10) akes on No. 7 Northlake Christian (21-7) at 10:50 a.m. The winner will meet the winner of No. 3 Academy of The Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau (24-8) and No. 11 Highland Baptist in the semifinals on Friday. Sacred Heart and Highland Baptist (26-15) face off at 12:40 p.m.
