State Volleyball Championships: Dominican-MCA title game rematch set; Newman, Pope John Paul, Country Day also win semifinals
To no one’s surprise, the rivalry trilogy that is Dominican and Mount Carmel Academy will continue Saturday night for the Division I state championship.
Top-seeded Dominican saw to that with a solid 25-22, 25-13, 25-10 win over Northshore.
Anne Hardouin reached the elite 1,000 kill plateau for her brilliant career, joining teammates O’Neill Haddad and Zoe Smith in the career 1,000 career kills category.
Dominican (43-3) advances to the title match, in search of a third straight championship Saturday night against district rival and second seed Mount Carmel Academy.
The Cubs (37-3) fought off No. 6 St. Joseph’s Academy 25-9, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Lindsey Wickersham put away 21 kills, Nola Sevin had 28 digs and Ellen Brown had 26 assists for the Cubs. Ellie Foco had 18 kills for the Redstickers.
Dominican and Mount Carmel split a pair of regular season matchups. The rubber match decides the title. Mount Carmel won six straight state titles before Dominican won the last two championships.
In Division II, No. 2 Teurlings Catholic outlasted No. 3 Ben Franklin 25-22, 14-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-9. The Rebels advance to meet district rival and defending champion St. Thomas More in the title match Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
In Division III, No. 1 seed Dunham eliminated No. 4 Haynes Academy 25-17, 25-20, 25-18. The Tigers will take on No. 3 seed E.D. White Catholic Saturday at 2 p.m. in the final. The Cardinals eliminated No. 2 Archbishop Hannan 20-25, 27-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-9.
In Division IV, top seed Newman downed No. 5 Notre Dame 25-15, 25-20, 25-22. The Greenies (38-5) will square off with No. 2 Pope John Paul II in the final Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Jaguars fought off No. 6 Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans 24-26, 25-21, 22-25, 25-16, 15-10.
In Division V, Country Day looks for a seventh straight state title Saturday at 9 a.m. The top-seeded Cajuns reached the championship match with a convincing 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 win over No. 4 Ascension Episcopal.
Country Day (31-4) will take on No. 2 Westminster Christian in the final. Westminster eliminated Central Catholic 25-21, 25-11, 22-25, 25-15.
