State champion wrestlers Jacob and Evan Frost share New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month honor for February

NEW ORLEANS (March 4, 2021) – Jacob and Evan Frost, the highly accomplished wrestling duo from Holy Cross, have been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month for February. Monthly award-winners are selected by the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

The Frost Brothers, both juniors at Holy Cross, swept their way to individual championships at the 2021 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Raising Canes River Center in Baton Rouge February 26-27. The titles were the third consecutive individual state championships for each of the brothers. Evan won the 132-pound title, pinning three of six opponents. He defeated second-seed Carter Duet of St. Paul’s by technical fall (17-2) in the championship match. Jacob won the 138-pound title, pinning five of six opponents. He pinned second-seed Sean Cripple of St. Paul’s in 2:15 of the title match to finish the season a perfect 30-0. Their victories helped Holy Cross, coached by Ryan Hess, to a second-place finish in the Division I team race behind champion St. Paul’s. Both will return next year to try to tie a Louisiana record by winning four consecutive individual state titles.

The Frost Brothers, who also won the honor last August while competing for the Bayou Elite Wrestling Club, were selected for the honor over a baseball slugger and three basketball stars.

• Delgado first baseman Brayden Jobert compiled a .444 batting average in 11 games during the month of February. Jobert’s bat combined for 16 hits including six doubles, a triple and three home runs (one a grand slam) for a .917 slugging percentage and a .488 on base percentage. On February 27, he hit a three-run home run and a grand slam in the same game, the grand slam driving in the final four runs in Delgado’s 11-1 walk off mercy rule win over Lincoln Trail College. For the month, he accounted for 11 runs and 24 RBI including 11 over four games against Lincoln Trail. The LSU signee for 2021-22 was named National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Week for Feb. 22-Feb. 28.
• Tulane star JerKaila Jordan, a freshman from John Curtis Christian, had another big month for the Green Wave in February as she averaged 18.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game in a 5-2 month. She closed the month on a very impressive tear as she had a pair of 29-point efforts and a 28-point game – she is one of just three freshmen in the country this year to have three straight games of 28 or more points. No other Tulane freshman in program history has even one 28-point game. She was the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week three times during the month (she has earned that honor a record seven times this year) and she also earned LSAW Player of the Week honors once. The John Curtis graduate ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in scoring (16.7), field-goal percentage (.489), free throw percentage (.716) and steals (2.0).  Jordan has led Tulane to an overall record of 15-7 and an AAC mark of 11-6 (fourth place) through February.
• Xavier University’s Rayshawn Mart averaged 19.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.6 steals and eight February games as he led the Gold Rush to its second-straight Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Tournament championship. In addition to earning tournament MVP honors, he was named the GCAC Player of the Year, the first player from XULA to win this award. In the conference’s championship game, Mart scored 25 points with eight rebounds in a 70-60 victory against top-seeded Talladega, ranked No. 9 nationally in the NAIA. Also a repeat selection to the all-conference team and the all-defensive team, Mart became the fourth player from XULA to reach 1,600 career points.
• Moon Ursin, a graduate of Destrehan High School, has had a big senior year for the No. 7 Baylor Bears. The 5-6 guard keyed Baylor’s perfect 7-0 month of February in which they captured a share of their 11th straight conference title with win over K-State on February 27. Ursin averaged 13.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game during February. She scored 17 points in a 70-51 win over Oklahoma and added a pair of 16-point performances as well as tallying a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Bears blew out Texas, the second-place team in the Big 12, on Feb. 14. She also dished out a career-high eight assists in the win over Kanas State which clinched the share of the Big 12 title. For the season, Ursin leads the Bears in minutes played (31.2 mpg); is second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg), assists and steals; and third in rebounding. She is shooting 49 percent from the field, 36.7 percent from three and 72.5 percent from the line. Baylor is 19-2 overall and 14-1 in Big 12 play (through Feb. 28).

The Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible.
