St. Thomas Aquinas blanks Episcopal to reach Division III baseball title game

It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 for the Division III state title Saturday in Hammond.

Layton Pittman pitched a six-hit shutout and had two hits and two RBI as No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas blanked No. 5 Episcopal 9-0 at home in the semifinals Thursday.

Pittman struck out three and walked one and got huge offensive support from Logan Pierre and Jordan Trapani, each whom blasted a three-run homer. Parker Perrilloux added a pair of hits for the Falcons.

Luke Hill took the loss for the Knights (23-9).

The Falcons (29-7) are in the state championship game for the third time in seven years and will face a showdown against No. 2 St. Charles Catholic at 6 p.m. Saturday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in Hammond. The Comets downed No. 3 Notre Dame, 4-1.

St. Thomas Aquinas won the Class 2A state championship in 2016 and finished second in Division III in 2018.

St. Charles Catholic won the Division III state title in 2019 and lost in the championship game a year ago.
