St. Paul’s, St. Joseph’s Academy, Neville, The Willow School win state team tennis titles

In the LHSAA tennis state championships in Monroe, St. Paul’s, St. Joseph’s Academy, Neville and The Willow School captured state titles Tuesday at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

In the boys singles final, Steven Rice of Barbe rallied to defeat Brody Sawyer of St. Paul’s 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 for the championship.

In the boys doubles competition, the Brother Martin duo of Mark Armbruster and Mitchell Armbruster handled Reece Beckendorf and Kieffer Schwartz 6-3, 6-1 for the title.

In the girls Division I competition, St. Joseph’s Academy claimed the title with 13.5 points while Byrd was second with 11 points. Mandeville was third with 5.5 points.

Natalie Devraj of Mandeville captured the Division I singles state title, whipping Isabella Young of Byrd 6-2 6-0 in the title match.

In the girls Division II doubles final, Sophia Manuel and Caroline Pousson of St. Joseph’s Academy downed Morgan Young and Sydney Young of Byrd 6-2, 6-3.

In the boys Division II competition, Neville edged St. Thomas More for the title with 15 points to 13 for the Cougars.

In the singles final, Mason Landreth of St. Thomas More defeated Mitchell Spence of Neville 6-0, 6-2.

The Cougars also won the doubles championship with Ben Davis and John David McCrory beating Benton Anzalone and Christian Williams of Neville 6-1, 6-2.

In the girls Division II competition, The Willow School won the state championship with 16 points with Neville second with 12.5 points. St. Scholastica finished third with eight points and Archbishop Hannan was fourth with 7.5 points

In the singles final, My-Anh Holmes of The Willow School captured the title, defeating Lauren Graham of Neville 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, the Hannan team of Avery Lewis and Sydney Smyczynski won the championship over Maiou Zhang and Usha Ramdall of The Willow School 6-2, 6-1.

The Division III and Division IV boys and girls titles will be decided Thursday and Friday.
