Rummel at Shaw football

Archbishop Shaw will now host St. James at 2 p.m. Saturday at Joe Zimmerman Stadium.

Shaw did not play week one against St. Charles Catholic while Landry, their Week 2 opponent, could not play this week.

St. James-Terrebonne was canceled last week as well. West St. John could not play the Wildcats this week.

“Everyone is working to get back to normal,” Shaw coach Tommy Connors said. “We have players who have work still going on at their homes. I spoke to Coach Robert Valdez and they wanted to find a game and so did we to get the season started. It is exciting. Neither of our opponents were able to play and this is a blessing for us to be able to get together.”

For St. James, in a parish and community that was hit extremely hard by Ida, returning to the field is a big deal.

“It will likely be helter-skelter but at least for a couple of hours, we will have a little normalcy,” Valdez said. “We had 34 kids show up Tuesday. They were so happy to see each other. We did a little warmup and stretching. Shaw is in the same situation. We will go out and play. For a few hours, it will give our school and community something positive in the midst of the difficulty.”
