St. Charles Catholic

It will be a battle of unbeatens and the ultimate battle between the unstoppable force and the immovable object.

When St. Charles Catholic hosts Newman this week, it will be a matchup between a pair of teams that made deep runs in the Division III state playoffs in 2020.

The Comets reached the championship game, falling 12-7 to Lafayette Christian, a week after LCA eliminated the Greenies 21-7.

A year ago, Newman downed St. Charles Catholic 14-7 at Lupin Field in a tough, defensive battle.

This year, led by junior quarterback Arch Manning, is averaging 51.5 points per game.

This year, led by nose guard Moses Clark, are allowing 4.7 points per game, including posting three shutouts.

The two Division II powers are chasing LCA, which has won four consecutive state titles.

St. Charles Catholic tops our CrescentCitySports.com Division II rankings, based on a tougher schedule to date by a very narrow margin over Newman but that will be settled on the field this week. Lafayette Christian is a close third with defending Class 2A state champion Many fourth and Amite fifth. Unbeaten Loreauville is sixth, followed by Notre Dame, General Trass, Mangham and Avoyelles. Notre Dame hosts LCA in a showdown Thursday night.

In Class 5A, Catholic of Baton Rouge rolls on to remain on top with Zachary second. Brother Martin is up to third after an impressive win over Rummel. Ponchatoula is fourth and John Curtis and head coach J.T. Curtis, who won his 600th career game last Friday, is fifth. Unbeaten Captain Shreve is sixth with Acadiana seventh, unbeaten Destrehan eighth, Ruston ninth and unbeaten Natchitoches Central moving in at No. 10.

Warren Easton and Teurlings Catholic fall to sixth and seventh. Huntington is eighth with unbeaten Liberty ninth and Salmen moving in at No. 10.
