St. Augustine gets first district win over Shaw, 20-0
Something had to give.
Two teams in search of their first Catholic League victory hooked up Saturday afternoon at Tad Gormley Stadium.
The favored St. Augustine Purple Knights finally finished a game well in a 20-0 victory over Archbishop Shaw in a game seen live at CrescentCitySports.com and heard live on 106.1 FM NASH ICON.
The Purple Knights got enough offense, a big play in the kicking game and a relentless defensive effort to produce the victory.
Kendell Sampson Jr. passed for one score while Mahmoud Bailey ran for another to pace the offense while the Purple Knight defense held Shaw to just 44 total yards, including minus two yards passing.
The Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the first quarter after partially blocking a punt but a 43-yard field goal attempt by Dawson Donahue was wide left.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Purple Knights grabbed the lead early in the second quarter, driving 80 yards in nine plays, taking 3:27 off the clock with Kendell Sampson hitting Jaheim Walters on a 40-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 with 10:20 to play in the half.
The Purple Knights increased the lead when its kicking game produced a third quarter score as Tahj Adams recovered a blocked punt by Jabaz Myles Perique in the end zone for a score to make it 13-0.
The final score came in the fourth quarter when Bailey scored on an 11-yard run to account for the final margin.
Sampson completed 8-of-17 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown and ran 10 times for 53 yards. Bailey finished with nine carries for 32 yards and a score and had three catches for 16 yards while Justin Doyle had 12 carries for 66 yards. Walters finished with two catches for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Rayon McGrew rushed 12 times for 21 yards for the Eagles (2-7, 0-6) while Tyler Nichol could not get the passing game going, completing 2-of-24 passes for minus two yards with an interception as Shaw remained winless in district play since 2015, dropping their 28th straight Catholic League contest.
St. Augustine closes its regular season next Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at Tad Gormley Stadium against Holy Cross in Catholic League play in a game that you can listen to live on 106.1 FM NASH ICON while Shaw finishes with a non-district game at home against H.L. Bourgeois Friday night at Joe Zimmerman Stadium.
