NEW ORLEANS – A pair of standouts from an historic baseball season at St. Augustine signed national letters-of-intent Wednesday.

Middle infielder Will Spears Jr. inked with Little Rock, while pitcher/utility player Michael Mims is headed to Grambling State.

Spears and Mims helped lead the Purple Knights to a first-round playoff series victory over Archbishop Rummel, the first time St. Augustine has advanced in the playoffs in school history.

Spears verbally committed to play for the Trojans of the Sun Belt Conference in August. He batted .422 as a junior.

Mims, a former quarterback for the Purple Knights who generated some recruiting interest in that sport as well, pitched a complete game in the first game of the best-of-three series victory over Rummel and had a 5-3 record and 2.55 ERA as a junior.

Both players are also products of the MLB Urban Youth Academy program based at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
