ST. AMANT — It was a showdown for the District 5-5A championship in St. Amant as the host Gators took on the East Ascension Spartans down in The Pit.

Overcoming a 10-7 halftime deficit, St. Amant tallied 15 unanswered points to defeat their parish rivals 22-10 and take the District 5-5A crown.

After a scoreless first quarter, the offenses finally broke through in the second. Cade Nelson went up the middle for a 17 yard touchdown, capping a 9-play, 80 yard drive for St. Amant and giving them a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing possession, East Ascension answered with an 8-play, 65 yard drive of its own. Quarterback Jason Wakefield was 3-of-4 for 40 yards, including a 16 yard TD pass to Shaivonn Robinson that tied the game at seven.

St. Amant was on its way to answer, but Halen Miller was sacked and fumbled. Jordan Campbell made the recovery for East Ascension at the Gators’ 43 yard line. The Spartans took 12 plays to run down the clock and set up a 37-yard field goal by Ryan Gremillion as time expired, giving them a 10-7 halftime lead.

The Gators retook the lead on their first possession of the second half with a 75 yard drive. Miller hit K.J. Franklin on back to back passes for 36 yards. From there St. Amant stuck to the ground with eight straight rushes. Miller punched it in from one yard out, giving the Gators a 14-10 lead.

Franklin would make a big play on the defensive side of the ball with a sideline interception of Wakefield at the Spartan 29 yard line. The Gators were driving for another touchdown when Miller returned the favor by throwing a pick of his own. Darren Wilson caught a deflected pass at the one yard line, but he stepped back into the end zone and was forced out of the back for a safety, making the score 16-10.

Another turnover set up the final score of the game. Wakefield, who finished the game 10-for-25 for 142 yards, threw his second interception. This time, it was Reed Babin coming up with the pick. He returned it 58 yards to the East Ascension 25. Two plays later Nelson ran it in from 20 yards out. The Gators failed on the two-point conversion attempt, but the 22-10 margin would stand.

The Gators controlled the clock by rushing the ball 52 times for 237 yards. Cade Wilson led the way with 32 carries for 167 yards and two scores.

St. Amant improved to 9-1, 4-1 in district play with the victory, while the Spartans dropped to 8-2, also 4-1 in 5-5A. The loss snapped East Ascension’s seven-game win streak.
