Southern earns spot in SWAC baseball title game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern Jaguars sealed their chance to compete for the 2022 SWAC Baseball Tournament title with a 10-2 win over the Florida A&M Rattlers on Saturday.

The Jaguars earned their third straight appearance in the SWAC Tournament Championship game.

“We got out there, got some runs early, and the pitcher settled in to give us a good start,” said SU head coach Chris Crenshaw. “It all started with Tremaine Spears home run to center field.”

Southern’s Christian Davis picked up the win for Jaguars as he pitched seven innings allowing no earned runs.

How it Happened

B3 | Jaylen Armstrong singled through the right side of the field. Armstrong advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Taj Porter was walked. Tremaine Spears hit a homer to center field to bring Armstrong and Porter home (3-0, SU)

B2 | JJ Rollon stuck out swinging but reached first base on a passed ball. Rollon stole second. Rollon advanced to scoring position from a wild pitch. Armstrong tripled to center field and Rollon scored (4-0, SU)

B5 | Spears was hit by pitch. Hunter Tabb doubled to left center and Spears ran home (5-0, SU)

T7 | Will Brown reached first on a fielding error. Jared Weber was walked and Brown advanced to second. Jalen Niles singled through the right side on the field and Weber scored (5-2, SU)

B7 | Dorris singled down the third base line with a bunt. O’Neill Burgos singled to third base as Dorris advanced to second. Porter was hit by pitch and reached first. Burgos advanced to second and Dorris advanced to scoring position. Spears hit a SAC Fly to get Dorris home. Tabb doubled to right center to bring Porter and Burgos home. Caleb Tart singled to left field and Tabb ran home to score (9-2, SU)

B8 | Porter was walked. Spears tripled to left center and Porter scored.

Southern (W1) will match up with Alabama State (E1) for the 2022 SWAC Baseball Tournament title. Championship Day is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Regions Field with the contest set to be aired live on ESPN3.
