Southeastern’s Newsome, McNeese’s Tillman named Southland Volleyball Players of the Week

SLC Volleyball Players of Week

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern’s Kailin Newsome earned her third offensive player of the week award of the season and McNeese’s Bailey Tillman picked up her second defensive player of the week award of the year as the Southland Conference Volleyball Player of the Week awards were announced Monday by the conference office.

Offensive Player of the Week: Kailin Newsome, Southeastern – Jr. – Houston, Texas (Clear Brook HS)
Newsome earned her third award this season after earning 29 kills in seven sets played in wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi & Houston Christian. She collected her 10th double-double of the season in the win over the Huskies and was one dig short against the Islanders from getting a double-double in both matches. The wins moved SLU to 9-0 at home this season. Newsome leads the league in kills per set this year at 3.93.

Defensive Player of the Week: Bailey Tillman, McNeese – So. – Sugar Land, Texas (Fort Bend Austin HS)
Tillman led McNeese with 39 digs for an average of 6.50 per set in the Cowgirls’ two wins last week that put them in a tie for first place with Houston Christian. Tillman recorded 18 digs against Northwestern State then followed that with 21 digs against Texas A&M-Commerce for her 22nd match this season with 10 or more digs. She ranks second in the conference with 4.89 digs per set this season, with an average of 5.34 digs per set in conference play.
Honorable Mention: Sheilah Purcell, New Orleans; Ansley Tullis, Southeastern.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
