Southeastern’s Newsome, Arrington; McNeese’s Grose named Southland Volleyball Players of the Week
FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern’s Kailin Newsome and Jacqueline Arrington and McNeese’s Megan Grose are the winners of the Southland Conference’s volleyball weekly awards for the third week of the season, as announced by the conference office Monday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Kailin Newsome, Southeastern – Sr. – OH – Houston, Texas (Clear Brook HS)
Kailin Newsome continued to showcase herself as a premier player in college volleyball as she led the Lions to a 3-1 record this past week, including a monumental road win over LSU. Newsome averaged 4.5 kills per set on a .264 attack percentage, which saw true road victories over Texas State and LSU. Through four matches, Newsome had 72 total kills over 16 sets and 20+ kills against both Texas State (24) and Cal (21). Against Cal, Newsome eclipsed her 1,000th career kill (including her season at Wichita State).
Defensive Player of the Week: Jacqueline Arrington, Southeastern – Sr. – MB – Houston, Texas (Pearland HS)
Jacqueline Arrington was a huge piece defensively in leading Southeastern to a 3-1 week, including a historic win at LSU. Arrington averaged 1.19 blocks per set and 19 total blocks in the three contests. Arrington has 14 assisted blocks and five solos with only one block error. In the win over LSU in Baton Rouge, Arrington had nine block assists in four sets. Additionally, Arrington finished with 30 kills in her four matches this past week.
Setter of the Week: Megan Grose, McNeese – Fr. – S – Brighton, Mich. (St Catherine of Siena Academy)
Megan Grose had a huge weekend for the Cowgirls early in the week against Southern and at the McNeese Invitational, which saw three five-set matches. Grose recorded at least 30 assists in each of the four matches last week, including a career-high 67 against Southeast Missouri State. Grose also picked up her first double-double of the season with 13 digs against the Redhawks. Grose averaged 11.89 assists per set throughout the week.
