Ferlando Jordan

HAMMOND, La. – After helping No. 15/17 Southeastern Louisiana University to a season-opening 49-28 win at North Alabama, senior quarterback Cole Kelley and junior defensive back Ferlando Jordan were honored by the Southland Conference with the first weekly honors of the season, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Kelley was named the Southland Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career, while Jordan was tabbed the league’s Defensive Player of the Week also for his third time as a Lion. Jordan now has four league weekly honors to his credit, as he earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors back on March 15.

The Lafayette, Louisiana native was also named Louisiana Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career.

Kelley, the reigning Walter Payton Award winner and one of 35 players nationally on the preseason watch list for the honor this fall, led an efficient Southeastern offense that racked up 495 yards (263 passing, 232 rushing) and 30 first downs, converting 10-of-15 third down attempts on the way to controlling the ball for nearly 37 minutes.

Kelley threw for 263 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions on 30-for-41 passing, while also rushing for 43 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Jordan, one of 12 two-time All-Americans in program history and one of 35 members on the preseason Buck Buchanan Award watch list, cemented his name in the Southland Conference record books with a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter that gave SLU a three-touchdown advantage.

The pick six was the fifth of Jordan’s Southeastern career, establishing a new Southland Conference career mark and breaking the tie with Sam Houston State’s Robert Shaw for the all-time mark. With 11 career interceptions, the Atlanta, Georgia native is now tied for fourth on the school’s all-time leaderboard.

On Saturday, SLU travels to Louisiana Tech for a 6 p.m. game in Ruston. The game will be televised on ESPN3 and can be heard in the Hammond area on Kajun 107.1 FM, Tangi 96.5 FM and WFPR 1400 AM, as well as online on kajun107.net and tangiradio.net.
