Southeastern’s Del Barrio claims Southland Weekly Tennis Honors
HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University tennis team to its fourth win in the last five matches, Lion junior Carla Del Barrio was named the Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week in an announcement from the league office Tuesday.
Del Barrio, a native of Vigo, Spain, is the second Lion to receive SLC weekly honors this spring. Teammate Putri Insani earned the honor Feb. 21.
In Saturday’s 7-0 victory over Bradley, Del Barrio was one of four Southeastern players to win in singles and doubles play. She teamed with Gabrielle Dekkkers for a 6-2 victory over Anna Belogliadova and Maria Bezmenova on the No. 2 court. In singles play, she bounced back from a set down to defeat Kirstin Hailey, 2-6, 6-3, 11-9.
In her debut season in Hammond after transferring from Nevada, Del Barrio is 5-2 in singles play. She and Dekkers have won both of their matches as a doubles pairing.
Del Barrio and the Lions will face Gonzaga Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
