Southeastern’s Caitlyn Williams named LSWA Player of the Week
HAMMOND, La. – After averaging a double-double and helping Southeastern Louisiana to a 3-0 week, Lady Lion senior forward Caitlyn Williams was named the LSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.
Williams is the first Lady Lion to receive state honors this season. Teammate Hailey Giaratano was named Southland Conference Player of the Week back on Feb. 15.
“Since she’s been back, Caitlyn’s been working hard,” Southeastern head coach Ayla Guzzardo said. “She’s been a key contributor to our success and is very deserving of this honor. Caitlyn’s developed into a vocal leader for us on and off the court. We’re very proud.”
Williams averaged 11.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in SLU’s wins over Abilene Christian, McNeese and Northwestern State last week. Her breakout performance came versus ACU, as she scored 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to help SLU overcome a 14-point deficit in a 51-46 victory.
After missing the first two-plus months of the season, Williams has returned to the lineup and the Lady Lions are 5-0 in games she’s played in.
Southeastern has won its last six games – matching its longest-ever Southland winning streak – and has secured its first winning overall and league records since the 2008-09 season. The Lady Lions have also clinched a spot in next week’s Southland Conference Tournament.
SLU can clinch the No. 2 seed and a bye into Saturday’s semifinals with a pair of wins or a win and a Sam Houston loss during the final week of the regular season. Southeastern travels to Central Arkansas on Wednesday, before heading to New Orleans on Saturday. Both games tip-off at 4 p.m.
