HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana worked out some early-season frustrations Friday night, pounding out 16 hits in an 11-0 win over Stony Brook and three Lion pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Lions (4-5) broke out of the offensive doldrums as every starter in the lineup except one picked up a hit against a trio of Stony Brook (1-7) pitchers. Champ Artigues, a redshirt freshman from Hammond, and Tyler Finke led the charge offensively. Artigues went 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and a pair of runs scored while Finke was 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and three stole bases.

Meanwhile, the Southeastern pitching staff bounced back from an ugly performance in its previous outing. Trey Shaffer (3-0), Kyle Flettrich and Corbin Bozosi combined to strike out nine batters and shut down the SeaWolves’ bats.

Southeastern wasted little time setting a tone for the game. Shaffer fanned the first two batters he faced and then picked a runner off after issuing a walk. In the bottom of the first, the Lions scored four runs on six hits.

Evan Keller and Finke knocked back-to-back singles leading off the inning and then combined for a double steal. Artigues drove them in with a two-out single. He scored on Jacob Burke’s first career home run, a two-run blast to left field.

The Lions followed the script again in the second. Keller walked and Finke singled. The pair executed their second double steal of the game and both scored on Artigues’ two-out single to right field.

Southeastern added a run in the third on Nick Ray’s RBI triple to left-center field and another run in the fourth when Finke scored on a sacrifice fly after ripping a triple inside the third-base bag.

Three more runs in the sixth, coming on Burke’s RBI double and Eli Johnson’s two-run single, completed the scoring onslaught.

Shaffer earned the win, allowing one hit and four walks in five scoreless innings of work. The junior left-hander from Biloxi, Mississippi struck out five. Stony Brook starter Jared Milch (0-2) suffered the loss, his second to the Lions in as many seasons. The southpaw surrendered eight runs on 11 hits in four innings pitched.

Burke (2-for-4), Johnson (2-for-3) and Ray (2-for-5) joined Artigues and Finke with multiple hits.

The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. Leap Year babies, born on February 29, will receive a complimentary ticket for Saturday’s game by presenting their ID at the ballpark ticket window.
