Southeastern Louisiana’s Veal selected to Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship roster
All-Star event held at Minneapolis’ Target Center to air live on ESPN on April 4
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Southeastern Louisiana’s Marlain Veal has been selected to the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship roster for the 31st annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at Minneapolis’ Target Center on Thursday, April 4, Intersport announced today. Veal is one of eight men’s college basketball players selected for the event that will air live on ESPN at 8 p.m. CT. He was invited to take part in the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship after being recognized as one of the nation’s most athletic dunkers.
Veal, a New Orleans, Louisiana native, led the Lions in three-pointers made (70) despite being hampered by a season-long injury; a torn meniscus he suffered in a scrimmage against ULM October 23rd.
The first team All-Southland selection finished his SLU career as the second leading scorer in program history (1,666). The Helen Cox grad is the program’s all-time leader in games played (132), steals (220) and assists (595).
“I’m blessed and honored they would even consider me,” said Veal. “I’m going to go there and do the best I can and represent the school and my teammates as well as I can.”
Veal, under the guidance of SLU head coach Jay Ladner, grew into a three-time All-Southland selection and 2017-18 Southland Defensive Player of the Year.
“I’m very proud of Marlain’s incredible career here,” said Ladner. “It’s a great accomplishment for him to be invited to compete with the nation’s best.”
Intersport, producers of the event, invites 24 of the nation’s elite men’s and women’s college basketball players to compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships (eight dunkers, along with eight men’s and eight women’s shooters).
