HAMMOND, La. – With four runs unearned runs in the seventh inning Sunday, the Yellow Hammers ran away with a 9-4 win in the second game of the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball program’s annual Heart of a Lion Fall World Series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The series is now even at one game apiece.

Four runs over the course of the first three innings staked the Yellow Hammers (1-1) to a 4-0 lead, but the Mamou Mambas (1-1) pulled within one in the top of the fourth.

Tyler Finke bunted for a one-out single and then promptly stole second base, later advancing to third on a wild pitch. After designated hitter Pierce Leavengood was hit by a two-out pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch, first baseman Taylor Phillips doubled through the left side to drive in both runners. Ethan Butler, a freshman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, followed with a double down the left-field line to score Phillips.

Nick Ray wiped out all of the Mambas’ momentum, blasting a solo home run leading off the bottom of the inning. It was the third homer of the fall for Ray.

The Yellow Hammers would muster just one hit the rest of the way, taking advantage of two-out walks and miscues in the seventh to extend their lead.

Starting pitcher Jay Long (4-2) earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings pitched. The southpaw transfer from Johnson County C.C. in Kansas walked one and struck out nine batters. Right-handers Jacob Scherer and Reid Reynolds combined to allow one run in four innings of relief, striking out seven.
