Southeastern Football Spring Practice Report (3/19/22)

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University head football coach Frank Scelfo has been pleased with his team’s performance through the opening weeks of spring practice.

Thursday’s workout saw the Lions work on short yardage and red zone situations. Scelfo saw positive signs on both sides of the ball.

“We wanted to be more physical this spring and we’re really starting to see that develop,” Scelfo commented. “The defense really made some big plays on third-and-shorts and goal line situations early (Thursday, but our offense came back and took control towards the end of practice. It’s been a good give-and-take every day and we’re playing with good energy.”

Scelfo was hesitant to single out any position groups for praise or as areas that need work.

“We’re just looking for consistency across the board,” Scelfo commented. “We have a lot of new faces we’re evaluating and putting in different spots to see where they’re going to fit in. We don’t have any starters right now and everyone’s competing for a starting spot. Our guys know they have to perform each and every segment of practice in order to earn playing time.”

The Lions will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. through April 9. SLU, one of six FCS schools to finish in the top 25 in the national polls each of the past three seasons, will open the 2022 season at UL Lafayette on Sept. 3.
