Southeastern falls to SFA, 62-51, in Southland women’s opener

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana forced Stephen F. Austin into 23 turnovers, but the Ladyjacks were able to hold on for a 62-51 victory in the Southland Conference women’s basketball opener for both teams Wednesday evening in the University Center.

Southeastern (5-7, 0-1 Southland) lost its third straight conference opener, as the Lady Lions could not overcome 31.6 percent (18-for-57) shooting from the field. Stephen F. Austin (10-3, 1-0 Southland) outscored SLU, 39-15, combined in the first and third quarters on the way to its sixth win in its last seven games.

Celica Sterling handled the majority of the offensive load for the Lady Lions, finishing with a game-high 22 points. Caitlyn Williams was the other top contributor for Southeastern, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.

Jaclyn Scholvin led all players with four assists to pace SLU. She and Tyler Morrison each had a game-high three steals.

Alyssa Mayfield led SFA with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a double-double effort. She was one of three Ladyjacks in double figures, along with Stephanie Visscher and Chanell Hayes with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle early on, before Stephen F. Austin took control of the game in the latter part of the period. SFA closed out the opening quarter with a 13-2 run that gave the visitors a 20-6 lead.

Southeastern ratcheted up the defensive effort in the second quarter to get back into the game. The Lady Lions forced SFA into nine turnovers in the period, holding the Ladyjacks to just eight points over the second quarter and going into halftime with the deficit cut to 28-20.

The third quarter was the game’s turning point. Stephen F. Austin limited Southeastern to nine points on 3-for-11 shooting from the floor in the period. The Ladyjacks closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to go into the final quarter with a 47-29 advantage.

SFA would push the lead to as much as 21 in the final quarter. SLU closed the game on a 13-4 run to make the final margin more competitive.

Wednesday’s game was the first of three straight at home to open league play. On Saturday, SLU hosts Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. in the University.
