Southeastern drops Southland road opener at Lamar

BEAUMONT, TEXAS – Lamar jumped out to a 16-0 lead and never looked back on the way to a 94-54 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday night in the Montagne Center.

Southeastern (7-8, 2-2 Southland) never could get going in its first road game of its 2018-19 road schedule this season, shooting just 32.3[WU1] percent (20-for-62) from the field. Defending Southland Conference regular season champion Lamar (12-4, 5-0 Southland) netted 51.6 percent (33-for-64) of its field goal attempts on the way to its seventh straight victory.

Charliee Dugas led the Lady Lions with 13 points. Celica Sterling added nine points, while Caitlyn Williams and Jaclyn Scholvin pitched in with eight points apiece. Aminat Jubril finished with a team-high eight rebounds for SLU.

Miya Crump led Lamar with 31 points, netting six three-point field goals. Jadyn Pimentel added 21 points off the bench for the Cardinals, while Chastadie Barrs posted her third straight triple-double with 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

Lamar held SLU scoreless for the first five minutes of the game to take a commanding early advantage. The Lady Lions were able to settle down for the final half of the opening period, but went into the second quarter trailing, 23-9.

LU opened the second quarter with an 8-1 run to stretch the lead to 31-10 with 5:43 left in the first half. The Cardinals would lead, 40-19, at the break.

Any chance of a SLU comeback was ended in the third quarter. Lamar outscored SLU, 26-13, in the period to go into the final quarter up, 66-34. The Lady Lions would get no closer than 31 for the remainder of the contest.

Wednesday was the start of a stretch that sees Southeastern play three of its next four away from home, as McNeese hosts SLU on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Lake Charles.
