HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team closed out its opening week of spring drills with a practice Saturday morning in Strawberry Stadium.

Saturday marked the first day this spring that the Lions were in full pads. Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo also brought in officials to Saturday’s practice to work with the Lions in game-type situations.

Scelfo has been pleased with what he’s seen from his team through the first three practices.

“We’ve come out with great energy this first week,” Scelfo said. “We feel like we’re coming together as a team quickly. Our guys are buying in and displaying a willingness to do the right things expected of them, which is encouraging.”

Scelfo and his staff have been putting the Lions in different situations during the first week.

“We’re moving guys around and asking people to play multiple positions,” Scelfo commented. “We’ve been really pleased with how our guys have responded on both sides of the ball.”

One of the differences this spring has been the presence of black jerseys on the defensive side of the ball. Scelfo said the top 11 players from the previous day earn a black jersey for the next day’s practice. It’s just one of the changes the Lion defense has seen under first-year defensive coordinator Lance Guidry.

“Our defensive guys have really taken to our defensive staff and everything’s been positive in regards to the transition to a new defensive coordinator,” Scelfo stated. “We’re playing more fundamentally sound and we’re already seeing some huge improvements on that side of the ball.”

Scelfo wants to see his team build on the positives of the opening week.

“We have to win the turnover battle,” Scelfo commented. “We’ve done a good job at times forcing turnovers on defense and limiting turnovers on offense. That needs to continue to be a focal point for us.

“We brought officials to today’s practice and we did a good job avoiding penalties,” Scelfo added. “We just have to be ready to compete every day and limit our mental mistakes.”

Southeastern will open the second week of spring practice on Tuesday with a 3:50 p.m. workout. Highlighting week two will be Thursday’s 8 a.m. Pro Day.

The Lions open the 2019 season on Aug. 31, hosting Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
