HAMMOND, La. – Moses Greenwood scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Southeastern Louisiana men’s basketball team to an 81-67 win over New Orleans clinching the three-seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.

The Lions (16-14, 12-5 Southland) have won 12 of their last 14 games securing a bye in the first round of the conference tournament beginning Wednesday, March 13 in Katy, Texas. Southeastern will play Thursday, March 14 in Katy against an opponent to be announced.

Greenwood, in his final home game with SLU, shot 11-for-18 from the field and scored 25 points in the second half while grabbing nine rebounds for the game. The Sharon, Mississippi native also made 11 of 13 free throws. Senior Marlain Veal, the program’s second all-time leading scorer (1,614) added 14 points and eight assists. Junior Von Julien chipped in with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting.

“I thought Moses was settling for too many jumpers in the first half,” said fifth-year SLU head coach Jay Ladner. “He is a good jump shooter but his game is to score around the rim and I thought he did a much better job of getting to the spot in the second half and doing what he does. He plays his tail off every night and tonight was no different.”

The Lions jumped out to a 15-7 lead early but UNO responded with a 10-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. The game see-sawed for the remainder of the first half with SLU taking a 34-31 advantage to halftime.

In the second half, the Privateers took a 42-41 lead with 15:30 to go. The Lions took over from there going on a 14-4 run to take a 55-46 advantage with 9:58 remaining and led by as much as 16 before pulling away for the win.

SLU shot 26-for-51 (51 percent) for the game, outscored the Privateers 36-26 in the paint and got 17 second chance points. The Lions outrebounded UNO 30-28.

“UNO is a very physical team,” said Ladner. “I thought we were playing pretty well in the first half but their ability to get second chances and hustle plays kept them right there. But I thought we did a better job in the second half of rebounding and defending as well as executing on the offensive end. We were more patient and not just taking the first shot available. I also thought that (assistant coach Kyle Roane) put together a great game plan for us. But overall I’m very proud of our team.”

Southeastern will wrap up the regular season at Nicholls (13-17, 6-11 Southland) Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Lions defeated the Colonels, 91-70, at the University Center Feb. 2.
