HAMMOND, La. – The program’s career batting average leader Jameson Fisher, career hits leader Cass Hargis and career saves leader Stefan Lopez, the 2012 National Stopper of the Year, highlight the Southeastern Louisiana All-Decade Teams for the 2010s, head coach Matt Riser announced Saturday.

Bouncing back from an injury that cost him his entire junior season, Fisher produced the highest single-season (.424) and career (.375) batting averages in program history. Hargis, a member of the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame, became the Lions’ all-time leader in hits (299) midway through his senior season.

Lopez, also a Southeastern Hall of Famer, enjoyed a junior season that was quite possibly the most dominant campaign by a reliever in program history. The right-hander from New Iberia compiled a 2-1 record and a minuscule 0.61 ERA to go with his nation-leading 20 saves, Lopez was named the National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The right-hander fanned 42 while walking just five in 29.1 innings of work and held opponents to a .179 batting average.

Since the award was created in 2005 only three pitchers outside the Power 5 conferences have earned the honor and Lopez was the last. Putting it into further perspective, not only did he lead the nation in saves that season but the total set both program and Southland Conference single-season records that still stand.

The first team consists of starting pitchers Corey Gaconi, Mac Sceroler, and Tate Scioneaux, relievers Dylan Hills and Lopez along with utility player Drew Avans (reliever-outfielder), catcher Josh Cryer, first baseman Fisher, second baseman Brock Hebert, Justin Boudreaux at shortstop, third baseman Taylor Schwaner, Hargis in the outfield along with Jeff Harkensee and Jacob Seward, and designated hitter Daniel Midyett.

The second team consists of starting pitchers Andro Čutura, Brandon Efferson, and Jordan Hymel along with utility player Kyle Cedotal (starting pitcher-outfielder), relievers Jared Biddy and Kade Granier, Sam Roberson (catcher), Jonathan Pace (first base), Carson Crites (second base), Ben Hernandez (shortstop), Brett Hoffman (third base) along with outfielders Ryan Byers, Andrew Godbold and Harry Slade, and designated hitter Cody Gougler.

Fisher, Hebert and Seward were unanimous selections among the voters. Cryer, Gougler and Hargis were all repeat selections, having already be elected to the program’s 2000s All-Decade team. Hargis and Lopez are members of the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame while Hebert has been elected, but his induction ceremony has been postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Southeastern achieved the first 40-win season on the diamond in program history to kick off the decade and reached the threshold two more times, including a school-record 42 wins in 2015. The Lions also went 25-5 in conference play during the 2015 season, setting a Southland record for conference wins and claiming the regular season championship.

Returning to NCAA Regional play for the first time in 20 years, Southeastern claimed the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament championship and then earned a pair of NCAA at-large bids, the first in program history, during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Coaches during the decade include Jay Artigues (2006-13) and Matt Riser (2014 – present). Artigues, who currently serves as Director of Athletics at Southeastern, ranks second in program history with 276 on-field victories and earned LSWA Louisiana Coach of the Year honors in 2010. Riser, who was named the 2016 Southland Conference Coach of the Year, bypassed the legendary Pat Kenelly in coaching victories during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and currently ranks third all-time with 233 wins.

All-Decade teams were selected by a voting base that consisted of former Southeastern baseball letterwinners, coaches and administrators. Players earned placement on the ballot based on postseason awards, single-season and career records earned, and overall career achievements.
