Southand switches years, hosts for next two cross country and volleyball championships due to Hurricane Ida aftermath
Hurricane Impacts Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Volleyball Sites
FRISCO, Texas – Due to the impacts of Hurricane Ida to southeast Louisiana, the Southland Conference has announced it will move two of its fall championships – men’s and women’s cross country and volleyball – to new locations. The changes were agreed upon by the involved host institutions following campus and community assessments from the storm’s Aug. 29 landfall.
The 2021 Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships will move from Thibodaux, La., to Corpus Christi, Texas on Friday, Oct. 29. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, originally planned as the 2022 Cross Country Championships site, will switch years with Nicholls State University, the original host institution in 2021. The 2022 event will be held in Thibodaux on Oct. 28.
The 2021 Southland Volleyball Tournament (bracket) will move from Hammond, La., to Houston, Texas on Nov. 18-21. Houston Baptist University, the originally planned tournament host in 2022, will switch with Southeastern Louisiana University for this year’s event. SLU will now serve as the next host institution on Nov. 17-20, 2022.
“We are very appreciative of our campus administrators and coaches for considering these location changes,” Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett said. “Our members do a wonderful job of looking out for one another, and this allows our impacted campuses and their larger communities to focus on important local recovery matters. We look forward to great cross country and volleyball championships in Corpus Christi and Houston in the coming weeks, and will welcome these events back to Thibodaux and Hammond next fall.”
