Sophie B. Wright wins own tournament

The host team was the best team.

Sophie B. Wright won its inaugural Tournament of Champions Saturday evening, handling Crescent City Christian 84-67 in the title game.

The Pioneers jumped out to the early lead, taking a 21-18 edge into the second quarter and held on for a 37-34 lead by halftime. While the first half belonged to Crescent City Christian, the second half belonged to the home team.

Sophie B. Wright outscored the Pioneers 11-4 in the third quarter to take a 45-41 lead into the final quarter.

That is when the Warriors took over, routing the Pios 39-26 in the final frame to pull away for the victory.

Now 6-0, the Warriors return to action against a familiar opponent, hosting Crescent City Christian Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Pioneers fell to 7-5 with the loss.
