Softball: Thomas Jefferson, St. Charles Catholic, Riverside advance secure playoff wins

Area Prep Softball Playoff Report for Wednesday, April 21

Three area teams advanced in the LHSAA softball playoffs Tuesday.

In the Division II regional round, No. 4 Thomas Jefferson pummeled No. 13 University High 17-2 in a game shortened to 2 ½ innings by the mercy rule.

Things started a bit shaky for the Jaguars as the Cubs scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab the early lead but it was short lived.

Thomas Jefferson answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first.

Oscha Carter had a two-run triple, Caroline Burke had a two-run single and Ryleigh Dugas had an RBI double to highlight the frame.

The Jaguars scored eight more runs in the second inning to break it open at 15-2. Brooke Taylor had a base-clearing triple and Jaci Carmadelle had a two-run single as part of the outburst.

Thomas Jefferson finished it with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Avery Rapania took the loss for U-High (9-11).

Aubrynn Arcement picked up the win, allowing three hits, striking out four.

Thomas Jefferson (17-5) will host No. 5 Parkview Baptist Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Terrytown Playground in the quarterfinals. The Eagles advanced with a 12-1 victory over No. 12 Lusher Charter in five innings.

Also in Division II, No. 6 Vandebilt Catholic eliminated No. 11 De La Salle 11-0 in five innings.

In Division III, No. 5 St. Charles Catholic drilled No. 12 Pope John Paul II 18-0 in a game shortened to 2 ½ innings by the mercy rule.

The Comets (15-12) advance to face No. 4 Houma Christian Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Westside Softball Complex in Houma. The Warriors crushed No. 13 Dunham 16-1 in four innings.

Also in Division III, No. 6 Northlake Christian handled No. 11 McGehee 11-1 in five innings.

The Wolverines scored in every inning, pounding out 10 hits.

Northlake Christian scored single runs in the first three innings before putting up four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-0.

The Hawks scored a run in the top of the fifth to make it 7-1 before the Wolverines ended it with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Abigail Willie picked up the win, allowing just two hits while striking out eight, walking just one batter. Willie contributed two hits offensively. Willie carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before yielding a run on two hits to Amelie Westfall and Molly Harris.

Caroline Stephens ended the game by the mercy rule with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Stephens was 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Rylie Kuyper drove in three runs, including a pair on a triple.

Lauren Culbertson took the loss for McGehee (10-6).

The Wolverines (14-9) advance to play at No. 3 Holy Savior Menard Thursday at 5 p.m. Menard routed No. 14 St. Mary’s Academy 16-0 in 2 ½ innings.

In Division IV, No. 12 Riverside Academy went on the road and upset No. 5 St. Frederick 2-1.

Cara Campbell drove in the winning run with an RBI single while Camryn Loving homered for the Rebels.

Emily Vicknair went the distance to pick up the win.

Riverside (18-7) advances to meet No. 4 St. John, who edged No. 13 Covenant Christian 10-9.

In regional round action today, No. 12 Northshore travels to Bossier City to take on No. 5 Airline at 4 p.m. while No. 10 Hahnville goes to Central Louisiana to face No. 7 Pineville at 5 p.m. in Class 5A action.

In Class 4A, No. 11 Lakeshore renews its rivalry with district rival and No. 6 seed Franklinton at Franklinton at 5:30 p.m. while No. 10 Belle Chasse is at No. 7 Eunice at 5 p.m.

In 3A, No. 20 Albany entertains No. 4 Iowa at 6 p.m. while No. 6 Lutcher plays host to No. 11 Pine Prairie at 4:30 p.m.

In 2A, No. 12 French Settlement plays at No. 5 Lakeside at 5 p.m. while No. 2 Doyle is at No. 18 South Plaquemines at 5:30 p.m.

In Class B, No. 2 Holden welcomes No. 15 Elizabeth at 4:30 p.m.

In Division II, No. 6 Vandebilt Catholic squares off with No. 3 Haynes Academy at 6 p.m. at the JPRD Complex in Metairie at 6 p.m.
