Softball: St. Charles Catholic and Doyle advance to semifinals, Hahnville falls to St. Amant

St. Charles Catholic took care of business quickly and decisively Saturday.

The second-seeded Lady Comets blitzed No. 7 Pope John Paul II 16-1 in four innings at LaPlace in a game shortened to four innings in the Division III quarterfinals.

After the Lady Jaguars took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning, St. Charles Catholic put the game away immediately with 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Comets scored a run in the third and ended the game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The offense featured a trio of stars.

The Lady Comets banged out 15 hits, led by Dani Aucoin with three hits and three RBI while Hannah Brady had two hits and four RBI, including a walk-off, inside-the-park three-run homer.

Southeastern Louisiana signee Madison Hebert had two hits and drove in five runs, including a grand slam and an RBI double. Adrienne Arneti and Azaiyah Moll each added an RBI double.

Kamryn Cancienne picked up the win, allowing just one hit while striking out four.

St. Charles Catholic (24-4) advances to Broussard to face No. 3 Houma Christian in the semifinals Friday. Houma Christian blasted No. 11 Lafayette Christian 16-2 in four innings.

In Class 2A, No. 4 Doyle advanced to the semifinals in Sulphur with a 7-1 win over No. 5 Rosepine.

Doyle took a 2-0 lead after one inning and made it 3-0 with a run in the third. Doyle added three runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth.

Addison Contorno had three hits and three RBI to pace the Lady Tigers, Bella Collins had a two-run double KayKay Savant added an RBI single.

Ashlyn Hall had an RBI single for Rosepine in the top of the sixth ining.

Doyle (26-9) is back in Sulphur for a second straight year after reaching the title game, falling 4-2 to Many in the title game in 2021.

The win was significant in more ways than one as Doyle coach Amanda Decell claimed her 200th career victory.

In 5A, No. 2 St. Amant eliminated No. 10 Hahnville 11-2.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the third when St. Amant scored twice. The Lady Gators put it away with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 9-0. Hahnville got its two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer by Avery Edgar before St. Amant finished the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Aralee Beene and Kami Gautreau each homered to pace the Lady Gators.

Addison Jackson picked up the win while Laney Waguespack took the loss for the Lady Tigers.

St. Amant (29-2) advances to Sulphur and in the semifinals, the Lady Gators will face No. 3 Walker, who downed No. 22 Acadiana 7-3.
